The taste of Shabbat – Parshat Shmini 5776

Rav Mordechai Elon

Our Parsha, Shmini, is a direct continuation of Parshat Tzav that we read last week. Last week's parsha ended with the command given to the Cohanim for the duration of the seven days of preparation :

וּמִפֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד לֹא תֵצְאוּ, שִׁבְעַת יָמִים

And they shall not leave the tent of meeting for seven days

After a week of preparations the big day, the eighth day, arrives:

וַיְהִי בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁמִינִי קָרָא מֹשֶׁה..

And on the Eighth day Moshe called…

As Rashi tells us :

The Eight day of preparation was the first day of Nissan on which the Mishkan was erected, the day the midrash tells us that Israel received ten crowns.

Why does Rashi have to tell us that the eighth day was the eighth day of preparations? We have just read about the first seven days. We also always look for a hidden meaning in the name of the parsha, to see how it contains the central message of the parsha – In our case it would seem to be a technical and "parve" name.
