The taste of Shabbat – Vayetze 5777
Rav Mordechai Elon
We will begin our shiur with Yaacov's wedding night, the night Rachel was swapped with Leah. We will try to understand Rachel's behavour.
During the night Yaacov, convinced he has married Rachel, calls out her name until
וַיְהִ֣י בַבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִנֵּה הִ֖וא לֵאָ֑ה
And morning came, and it was Leah
We all know the story from our kindergarten years how Rachel had passed the secret signs she had made with Yaacov to her sister. Let's ask a question we didn’t ask in the kindergarten, was it a good idea? She knew that morning would come and the trick would be discovered. She knew Yaacov loved only her. Rachel, by passing over the signs, did two things – number one she turned Leah into an unwanted wife. Number two, she loved but hurt Yaacov, why did she do this trick to him?
We must try to understand the midrash on a deeper level, and via it understand the legacy of our holy mothers
