The taste of Shabbat – Yitro 5778

Rav Mordechai Elon

There is something not clear about Moshe’s two children. It seems that they were not like Aharon’s children, who succeeded him. Aharon’s children were taught Torah by Moshe, and the Torah tells us that this makes Moshe almost their father. On the other hand, Moshe’s biological children don’t succeed him. They appear in this week’s Parsha

And Yitro, Moshe’s father in law took Zippora, Moshe’s wife after she was sent away, with her two children, who one was called Gershom meaning I was a stranger in a strange land, one was called Eliezer, meaning that the God of my forefathers helped me and saved me from Pharoah’s sword
We have already met Gershom, and now we will talk about Eliezer. This is the first time the Torah speaks about him. Our Rabbis, in a midrash will take us to an amazing heavenly world, and via Eliezer we will understand the story of Moshe climbing Sinai to receive the Torah.
