The taste of Shabbat – Bereshit 5779
Rav Mordechai Elon
Two verses basically sum up the whole parsha
This is the book of the history of man.—On they day God created man, He made him in the likeness of God;male and female He created them. And on the day they were created, He blessed them and called them Man
This is the story of the history of man
What is the story?
We will try and divide up the verse: (a) He made them in His image (b) He made them male and female (c) He called them man on the day He created them. Three terms : in the image of God, "male and female" and called "man".
What does it mean "on the day they were created", why is this written if the Torah has already told us "on the day God created".
What is meant by the term "in God's image"? Many have written about this idea, but what is the simple meaning of the text? Finally, what is added by telling us man was created male and female? The same is true of horses and mosquitos.
