The taste of Shabbat – vayera 5779
Rav Mordechai Elon
This week we read the pasuk that opens the reading for Rosh Hashana and stresses that
everything comes from God:
And God remembered Sarah as he said, and he did for Sarah as he had said
Last week Avram was promised a very special blessing
And all the families of Earth will be blessed via you
Blessing בכרה is like רביה having children, and this is the main meaning of this specific
blessing. We should take note of the following point: Avraham comes to Canaan after years in
Haran, in which he taught the world about God, and was part of two unfortunate international
events. The first with Pharaoh in Egypt and the second with Avimelech the king of Gerar. In
both stories Avraham, whom “the families of the world will be blessed via” causes barrenness,
the opposite of the blessing! Avraham’s number one export to the world is barrenness
