The taste of Shabbat – Ki Tavo 5777

וְהָיָָ֗ה בַּיּוֹ֘ם אֲשֶֶׁ֣ר תַַּּֽעַּבְרֶׁ֣וּ אֶת הַּיַּּרְ דן אֶל הָאָָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶר ה֥' אֱלֹהֶֶ֖יךָ
נֹ תֶׁ֣ן לָָ֑ךְ וַַּּֽהֲ קמֹתָָ֤ לְךָָ֙ אֲבָ נֶׁ֣ים גְדֹל֔ות…
And it will be, on the day that you cross the Jordan to the land the Lord, your God, is giving you, that you shall set up for yourself huge stones, and plaster them with lime.
The Torah gives us a short mitzvah that is explained in more detail in Sefer Yehoshua. The reason for erecting the twelve stones after crossing the Jordan is that our children will see them and ask why they are there. We will explain:
וְהודַּעְתֶֶ֖ם אֶת בְ ניכֶֶׁ֣ם לאמָֹ֑ר… אֲשֶר הו בישׁ֩ ה֨' אֱלֹ היכֶֶ֜ם אֶת מֵ֧י הַּיַּּרְ דֵּ֛ן מפְ ניכֶֶ֖ם עַַּּֽד עָבְרְכֶָ֑ם כַּאֲשֶֶׁ֣ר עָשָהׁ֩ ה֨' אֱלֹ היכֵֶ֧ם לְיַּם סֵּ֛וּף אֲשֶר הו ב֥יש מפָ נֶ֖ינוּ עַּד עָבְ רַּֽנוּ. לְמַּעַּן דֶַּ֜עַּת כָל עַּ מָ֤י הָאָָ֙רֶ ץ אֶת יֶַּׁ֣ד ה֔' כ֥י חזָקֶָ֖ה הָ֑יא.
Then, you shall let your children know, saying… For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until you passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which He dried up from before us, until we passed over. That all the people of the earth might know the power of the Lord, that it is mighty
